seed sounds

Bija (seed) mantras are single-syllable Sanskrit sounds used in yoga and meditation to resonate with and balance the body's seven main energy centers, or chakras

Let’s break this down.

What is a chakra?

There are traditions where there are 4 to 114 chakras. Within that range, there are 7 main energy bodies within the human form.  Each of these are located within a different region of the body and within each region certain energies are held.

The Seven Chakra and their Bija Mantras

  • Muladhara (Root Chakra): Lam | Base of the spine  – Grounding, stability, and earthly connection

  • Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra): Vam | Lower abdomen  – emotional balance, flow, and creativity

  • Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra): Ram | Upper abdomen – personal power, confidence and fire

  • Anahata (Heart Chakra): Yam | Chest Center – love, compassion, and healing

  • Vishuddha (Throat Chakra): Ham  | Throat– truth and clear communication.

  • Ajna (Third Eye Chakra): Om (Aum) | Between brows – intuition, light, and inner wisdom

  • Sahasrara (Crown Chakra): Silence or Om | Crown – Pure consciousness and spiritual connection

BIJA MANTRA:  When we chant the Chakra (Sanskrit for “wheel”) sounds, we receive the benefits of singing and deep breathing, as well as focusing. Some people like to focus on one particular sound, others like to chant the “full wheel”. No matter what you choose, know that the vibration of the sound moves the energy of the body.

1.  Let the sound rollout slowly for the duration of your breath.

2. Give an equal part of the exhale to each part of the syllable and feel where they resonate. Alternatively, you can chant each sound repeatedly and rapidly.

3. You can start at the base and move to the top, or start at the top and move to the base, or just pick one chakra and chant there. The important part is to practice mindfulness, or active listening, to your body and the sounds. There is not a wrong order in which to chant the bija mantras.
