am I safe?

Last week, my 6 year-old son told me about swirling emotions.  And how “sometimes they are good- like when you get on your bike and forget to put on your helmet! When your body has a swirling thought, it is telling you, you need to be safe.  But sometimes they are bad, sometimes they stop you from doing really cool stuff, like doing a mountain bike jump.  Did you know you have swirling emotions too?”

I looked at my Kindergarten son and found so much gratitude for the teaching happening within this classroom.  They are truly teaching skills many adults also need.

This week, my 6 year old son asked me, “Am I safe?”

My heart in an instant sank and swelled.  “YES.  You are safe, loved, supported and protected.  You will always be safe, especially within my arms.”

“But, I’m not in your arms now,” he responded.

I walked over and pulled him into my lap.  “My arms are bigger than these arms.  My arms are everywhere I have touched.  This house, our woods, the beach, everything and anywhere you go where you think, ‘Mom would love this’- I am there.”

He looked at me, deep in thought, “So your arms are like the whole Universe?  You love the stars and moon.”

“YES.  My arms are the whole Universe.”

I thought back to last week. “Is this a swirling emotion?”

“Not any more. Can I have a snack now?”

And just like that, my 6 year-old is safe and of course hungry.

I too am safe, loved, supported and protected. I have the arms of my loved ones and community around me within their arms.  In the words of a kindergarten classroom, my brain sometimes swirls with emotions, but I can always be grounded knowing what is helpful and what is harmful.

A Door Within:

  • Do I have swirling emotions that are helpful or harmful?

  • Do I feel safe?

  • Can I feel the protection, love and support of the Universe?

  • How can I share my web of connection with the Universal collective?

With love, light and safety,

♥ Ashley
