spring peepers

Tonight, as the sun begins to set, the spring peepers will begin their sweet chorus.  As one of the harbingers of spring, I too feel the transition of spring.  Every night as the sun is setting I swear their orchestra is growing.  Last weekend, it was an exciting rush to the door- “Do you hear that?!  The frogs are back!” Now day, after day, their numbers are growing to what will be a crescendo of thousands.

Spring is officially upon us.  The days may still be cool, but the change of season is here.  This past week or so has been non-stop action.  We are prepping the garden beds that have been long awaited.  I am in after unloading my second trailer load of horse manure, only to realize I need more.  Oh, my tomatoes will be so happy one day soon! The daffodils are emerging, the fireplace ring reset, I saw my first red-bellied snake and so many sticks are getting picked up.

In a few hours, I will be off to pick up the boys from school.  On our way home, we will have to stop at the creek.   We will be up to our knees in the rushing water grabbing suckers out of the water with our bare hands. Each spring these motivated fish swim as far as they can upstream. They struggle up creek to spawn, year after year.  These ancient looking fish can live up to 17 years making this arduous journey before returning back to the lake.  21 days later, the eggs- turned fry will join their elders in Lake Michigan.  But for now, they are safer in the shallow pools of the creek.

We all have our signs of spring.  With the return of sunny skies, green grass, hibernating animals, budding trees and flowers.  I invite you to pause and acknowledge the heralds of all that is to come this season.  As we work the land, and enjoy the fresh air, I truly believe that our bodies, minds and spirits are singing as the spring peepers do.  With joy and appreciation for another beautiful day.

The Week’s A Door Within:

  • What are your favorite harbingers of spring?

  • What traditions do you hold in the transition of seasons?

  • How can you seek joy and appreciation for today?
