Elephants, jellyfish and sailboats

The other day, my little one asked me to come lay on the blanket.  He had meticulously laid out his comforter, quilt, pillows and “blue blankie” is a sunny spot on the grass.  He was relaxing as only a cat could lounge.  But of course, I came to snuggle.

As we were laying there he began pointing out shapes in the clouds.  His little finger reaching, stretching my imagination- see the elephant?  There is a leg, an eye and his big floppy ears.  A few seconds later, now it's a jellyfish!  Do you see the tentacles?

I point to another cloud and ask if he sees my vision- “Nope, that’s a sailboat.”

I turned my phone on to record his sweet voice.  These are the moments I have been told by wise women to savor and know that they are just as fleeting as a drifting cloud.

As a mom, there was a moment of “Ugg, now I get to wash all his bedding yet tonight.” But there is also the simplistic joy of staring up at the clouds on a blue sky day with your baby. I lie there thinking, when was the last time I did this? Sometimes we need to accept the moments of spontaneity as just that; a moment to slow down, connect with our breath and with those we love most.

With Mother’s Day soon upon us, my mind had shifted to my phone that is out of memory, the new laundry pile and dinner that needed to go into the oven.  But I encourage you, spend time this weekend spread out on a quilt, gazing at the elephants and sailboats.

This Week’s A Door Within:

  • Break out your favorite quilt, find a warm spot- gaze up

  • Bonus points- snuggle with a loved one

  • What do you see, what do you feel?
