the pickle

Tis’ the season of traditions!

“The Pickle”

Sometimes my days feel so full and just when you think, "Can I fit one more thing into my day?” You're off to the store, because you forgot the extra special gift for the first person to find “The Pickle”.

My sons asked me after one had found the pickle and opened the little gift, “Why do we hide a pickle?” To which my husband replied, “I think it's a German tradition”.  Me being the one who needs the answers, does the ultimate fact check- I Googled it.

Guess what!  Most Germans have never heard of this tradition!  There are many speculations of where it originated, but it is most likely a tradition created by German ORNAMENT makers as a way to sell ornaments.

YUP!  That extra trip to Target- marketing ploy.

Dumbfoundedly I sat there, “ Why do we do this to ourselves?”

Why do we do so many of the things we do? It is because we actually want to or is it because we are told we are supposed to for the idyllic holiday season.  (Insert social media image of a family in matching PJs, with their holiday specific mugs, sitting under their themed tree here.)

This Week’s A Door Within:

  • What are you doing because you think you are supposed to?

  • What are traditions that you would like to stop doing?

  • Do you really need this?

  • Does this make me joyful and exuberant, or stressed on the way to burn out?

To a season with a bit more reason,

♥ Ashley
